SEAL BROOK WOODLAND SCHOOL

This course has been designed to give you an in-depth insight into how to safely and proficiently acquire protein for food from wild animals through different trapping techniques.

 

Due to UK wildlife law many ancient and improvised animal acquisition techniques are unlawful so this course will start by examining the different wildlife laws that exist within the UK and how we can stay legal whilst practicing the skills that would feed us in an emergency.

 

The group will then examine the animals that potentially on the menu and start to understand the animal behaviour and fieldcraft knowledge that is essential to success.

 

After looking at examples of different trapping setups you will be introduced to cutting tool safety and techniques to allow you to manufacture your owns traps for a target species.

Following this you will be introduced to some pre-caught game animals and we will discuss the considerations of humane dispatch, animal inspections and safe preparation. The game we prepare will then be cooked on the fire using a variety of cooking techniques and served for lunch.

After lunch you will learn the techniques that allow you to make your own cordage from natural materials, an essential skill for the manufacture of some traps and snare loops. Once the technique is mastered we will spend the rest of the afternoon learning the tools and techniques used to weave nets that can be used to catch birds, mammals and fish.

This is very much a hands on course and by the end of the day those hands will be sore! You will, however, leave with a new set of skills and understanding that will have you experimenting with different weaving and greenwood working projects for years to come.
